Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and bringing Emory back she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.
With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.
Some things are better left in the shadows.
Chapter Two: Memphis
They were running out of time. Morning would bring raiders and more of Adair’s men. Both of whom they weren’t prepared to fight off. Not yet, anyway. They pressed through the forest, Brokk practically bouncing beside Memphis, the rest of his friends wearing smug smirks.
Getting one of Adair’s men was a huge win for them. Memphis’s head was spinning from the anticipation of the information they could finally get their hands on, the first and most important being where their friend was hiding after all these years. They were all tired of playing cat and mouse. Memphis peeked back, seeing the red tinges of dawn on the horizon. Panic clutched his heart as he yelled, “We have to hurry!”
The guard grunted as Jaxson shoved him to move faster, while Memphis focused ahead of them. The trees started to thin, and soft rolling hills came into view. His entire body felt numb as he ran, cursing under his breath. The group followed tightly around him, staying in formation and never faltering, always prepared for the worst. They broke free from the safety of the woods, and Memphis frantically pressed his palm to the ground, hearing the purring of several clicks and whirs of the hidden scanner coming to life. A mechanical voice rang out, “Memphis Carter. Age twenty-three. Commander of Black Dawn Rebellion. Clear.”
Then, like a zombie rising from the grave, an iron-clad door slowly rose in front of them, dirt shifting and churning. Memphis pushed down hard on the handle, revealing a dark hallway. Ushering his team in, he took one last look at the scenery splayed before him: thick, rolling forest, and to the east, the skeletons of the Ruined City peeking out. Concrete and ghosts were all that was left.
