Book Review: Happy Mum, Happy Baby - My Adventures In Motherhood | Giovanna Fletcher

It's not very often you read a book and are hooked immediately not being able to put it down but Giovanna's books have me gripped and enticed everytime!

I pre-ordered this book when it was first announced for presale and managed to get a signed copy which I am ecstatic about. At first glance I thought it was going to be a bit of a parenting guide plus how and what techniques she uses in being a mummy. I was delightfully wrong when I realised it was more a real following of Gi's life from getting with Tom to where she is now with her 2 boys and lovely family. It's a brilliant and lovely piece by piece, chapter by chapter, book of Gi's memoirs and sort of life blog.

From start to finish you feel like a friend listening in, or sat watching what happens with your own eyes in their living room. She has you feeling every raw emotion along with them, from smiles and laughter, upset and hurting when something happened, to joy and elation of milestones. I have never found a book that has been written by somebody that tells it how it is yet it all relates to my own everyday life as well. She has captured the heart and soul of being a mum in great depth and isn't afraid of saying it how it is. Sharing her bad moments with her good, writing down and telling us how she felt in fear of breastfeeding in public which totally bringing my own memories back of the fear of Social stigma. Yet Gi shows that being a parent isn't all buttercups and daisies, but some damned hardwork that will pull your hair out whether you want it to or not and leave you begging for that 2minute break for a wee in peace. She writes about all the nitty gritty details that know one wants to tell you, like you are going to have poo/wee all over you, your tummy isn't going to be flat after birth and will be like a squishy marshmallow, or that it's perfectly normal to feel completely lost the minute your told you can go home with your perfect bundle of joy and wanting a manual on how to work the little milk guzzlers.

Its heartfelt and you can tell how hard she has worked on this book! The hours she must of spent pouring her love and soul into the pages for us all to read. I think she is one incredible lady sharing so much of her private life with her beautiful family and not afraid to step away from the "norm" and do things her own way, plus letting us tag along the way.  I honestly was gutted when I finished reading it and actually want to start it all again once I have got through my next 2 projects.

Even if your not a parent, reading this you can relate to her through our own rollercoaster of lives that we lead. It's hard not to nod and agree, or shout "go girl" or do a virtual fist bump or high five whatever the young ones do nowadays when they immensely agree ((god I feel old)).

I highly recommend reading "Happy Mum, Happy Baby" to everyone. Who ever reads it will not be disappointed at all it is amazing. One of the best books I have ever had the privilege to read and now review.

I give Happy Mum Happy Baby a massive 10/10 you won’t be able to put it down!!!

"Being a mum is an incredible journey, a remarkable experience that changes how we look, how we feel, who we are. As mothers we are strong, protective, proud. We feel a love like no other.

But being a parent can be hard too. It challenges us physically, mentally, emotionally. There are the days where just managing to fit a shower in amidst the endless feeding, entertaining young children and surviving on a lack of sleep feels like an achievement. With so many people ready to offer 'Advice' on the best way to parent, it can feel like you are getting it all wrong.
Since Giovanna and her husband Tom Fletcher have had their sons Buzz and Buddy, they have been sharing glimpses of their family life. With an infectiously positive outlook and happy take on all things mum-related, Giovanna has developed a following of fellow parents and mums-to-be.
This is not a book about how to have the perfect family experience – Gi would be the first to admit she is winging it just as much as the rest of us – instead it is an honest, upbeat and incredibly personal account of her own experience of having a family. In Happy mum, Happy Baby Giovanna shares her journey through parenthood and in doing so, she looks at what it is to be a mother today, encourages you to be confident in yourself as a parent and celebrates how putting a focus on being a happy and confident mum can really make for a happy baby.

About the Author:

Giovanna grew up in Essex with her Italian dad Mario, mum Kim, big sister Giorgina and little brother Mario, and spent most of her childhood talking to herself (it seems no one wanted to listen) or reading books.

At thirteen she left Essex behind to attend the full-time Sylvia Young Theatre School, where she met her husband Tom Fletcher. Following SYTS she completed an acting BA (hons) at Rose Bruford – since then she's been acting, chaperoning mini actors and dabbling in a spot of freelance journalism for heat, Bliss and Recognise magazines.
