Book Review: Girl 99 | Andy Jones

13:11 Daniel Riding 0 Comments

I do love a good romantic comedy, whether it be in the form of film or a good book nothing lifts my mood higher than a well written tale of the foibles of love and relationships. Not quite sure if I’ve used that word correctly but I’m hoping I get the point across. Foibles? Foibles! Anyway… …moving on.

Girl 99 by Andy Jones is a thoroughly entertaining read full of heart and a genuine perspective of love and dating from the guy’s perspective. I must admit I was a little cautious, only because I am used to reading from the perspective of the leading lady but I needn’t have worried as the writing, characters and story was so well done that it pulled me in from the start. This is my first novel of Andy’s that I have read and I really enjoyed the journey. The comedic element to this book is very well executed in particular the dialogue is what cracked me up the most as it gave clear indication of what the relationships were like between all of the characters.

Tom is our leading man I this story and it may seem like he is putting it about a bit (which he is but not in the way you would expect), he is unlucky in love and still has very strained (although highly entertaining) interactions with his ex-girlfriend Sadie. His Best friend El (who I adored, more on that later) finds it highly entertaining to hold Tom to a deal of getting the number of women he has slept with up to a grand total of 100 within a certain deadline. This, as you can imagine causes endless amounts of trouble for lovely Tom and we get to see how he bumbles along in pursuit of his goal.

This book is not all about Tom meeting his sexy time quota however, at the heart of this book we have a very honest and compelling tale about relationships whether that be friends, family or the romantic kind. We get to see Tom’s relationship with his father and younger sister, and how he is very much in the middle of those two acting as mediator and quite often as referee. I really enjoyed these scenes because it shows a genuine side of what family relationships can be, and while funny they were also very sweet as well.

I must say I did adore El, Tom’s best friend. He is gay with a partner and I must say as a gay man myself a truly appreciated Andy’s sensitivity to writing characters like this. Very often characters I look for can often be a cliché or just there as window dressing but I am so grateful to Andy for including inclusive, relatable and real characters which really made me smile. Unfortunately El is a very ill young man and this at times broke my heart but it didn’t lessen the love I had for this character, as he was also one of the funniest in the book.

I really enjoyed this book and think that if you needed a pick me up and a smile, then this is the book for you. With razor sharp wit, completely realistic characters and oodles of heart-warming moments, this is a wonderful book to curl up with.

I gave this book a highly entertaining 9/10

About the book:

When Tom’s girlfriend walks out on him the day before Christmas, he feels humiliated but not necessarily heartbroken. Sadie wasn’t, after all, The One. If we’re being precise, she was number eighty-five.

And so, for reasons that are only mostly wrong, Tom embarks on a mission to bring his number of encounters up to a nice neat one hundred.

Over the course of his quest he sleeps with a colleague, a colleague of a friend, a friend of a friend, a friend of a friend’s wife, the estate agent selling his flat and several more besides.

Everything is going, if not well, then at least according to plan…and then Tom meets Verity. Whether she’s The One remains to be seen, but she’s certainly more than just another number.

“I adore all of the women in my life,” he says. “I’d do anything for them.” He’s looking at me as he says it, and my heart flutters in my chest. But I’m not sure if he’s including me in that group, or if the hint of meaning I hear in his voice is nothing more than my imagination. I shake my head as I frown, trying to clear my thoughts. “You okay?” “Fine,” I say, though it’s not true. Our rhythm is off, and it’s scaring me. We’ve always been in sync, even before we were dating. And now—well, now it almost feels like he’s deliberately keeping me off balance. I want to get back to normal, and I don’t know the path, and my lack of confidence is frustrating me. “Are you heading home?” Ryan asks. I shake my head. “Oh, I don’t know. I haven’t decided. You?” “Moira and I are taking Mom back to the hotel.” I wait for him to invite me along, and when he doesn’t, I say, “It’ll be nice for you guys to have time to chat in the car. But she usually crashes early, doesn’t she?” “Usually. Why?” “Oh. Um.” I lick my lips. “Because I was wondering if you wanted to meet me somewhere. We could get a drink. We could talk.” “Talk,” he repeats. He meets my eyes, and I see the question in them—have I changed my mind? Am I going to say yes? I glance down at the floor. “Talk,” he repeats. “No, I’m sorry. I can’t do that.” I look up, frustrated. “But, Ryan, I just—” “I have plans. I’m going to Westerfield’s.” “Oh.” Westerfield’s is one of the hottest clubs in town. It’s also a Stark property, which means when Ryan goes he gets the full VIP treatment. Something that never fails to snag the attention of the female patrons. Most of whom are usually drunk. And wearing outfits that are barely big enough to keep a Barbie doll modest. “Oh,” I repeat. I wait for him to suggest I join him there, but all he says is, “It really was great that you came.” Then the bastard leans in and kisses my cheek. He kisses my f*cking cheek.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

    Riveted - cover

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him...even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying. When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

EXCERPT:

Church

She kissed me.

Her lips touched mine and she destroyed me. This tiny ray of light that seemed determined to chase the darkness inside of me away unraveled me with nothing more than the brush of her very soft lips against mine.

I should’ve pulled away, either that or gone all in. The attraction between us was only going to end one way, with me inside of her as we scorched through one another, so a real kiss with tongues and teeth and grabbing hands was inevitable, especially if she was holding the door wide open in invitation. I was already struggling with the friend thing and this wasn’t helping at all. I stood there, holding her, feeling her as she rubbed her mouth over mine, the barest hint of pressure as she took a taste, as she feathered her lips against mine like she was trying to memorize the shape, the feel, the flavor of them. It was the singularly softest touch I’d ever experienced and yet it had the power to make my knees weak and my blood pop with a desire so sharp it felt like it could pierce right through my skin.

Her hand cradled my jaw, her fingers shaking with some of the same things I was feeling. This thing that lived between us was hungry and tired of being ignored. It buzzed around us, electric and hot, refusing to be cooled by the chill in the night air that surrounded us. If we weren’t careful the passion that was hungry and needy between us would consume us, devour us, and leave us nothing more than hollow husks filled with fading satisfaction and jagged disenchantment because no matter how good we were together it couldn’t and wouldn’t last. I didn’t want any part of me to be responsible for burning her out. I liked that her light chased my shadows away and that meant I wasn’t going to have any kind of hand in dimming her internal glow.

Her breasts pressed into the center of my chest as she leaned more fully into me and I could feel the pointed peaks of her nipples stab into my skin. The sensation made my dick twitch behind my zipper and had all the available blood that was still above my belt rushing south. I’d always liked the way Dixie was built. She was on the shorter side, but every single part of her small frame was curved and lush. She looked like a woman that you could grab ahold of without having to watch yourself. She was delicate but in no way did she come across as fragile or breakable. She looked like she could take everything I had to give her, all the pent-up longing, all the nights of frustration I spent hard and alone, all the denied hunger that made me want to eat her up and then go back for seconds and thirds because I knew there was no way I was going to have my fill of her honeyed lips and velvety skin in one go.

There was so much of her to experience, and I wanted to know what all of it felt like, tasted like, sounded like. I wanted to watch her come from every possible position I could get her in, and then I wanted to find some new ones, ones no man had ever had her in before, and watch her come in those, too. Because I knew once I got her she would let me have her in ways she hadn’t let anyone else. Her eyes, so pretty and dark, made me all kids of promises, and I wanted to take her up on every single one of them. But there wasn’t anything I could promise in return, and that always kept me from crossing the invisible line.

She ran the tip of her nose along the edge of my jaw and that little nuzzle made my entire body shudder. She had the ability to bring down all the walls I’d so carefully built up around us in order to keep both of us safe. She didn’t have any clue the kind of damage I could do if I ignored all the warning bells ringing loudly in the back of my mind. I knew the ways in which I could wreck the women in my life that I cared about and there was no way on God’s green and often unforgiving Earth that I would subject her to that. I barely survived the loss of the last woman I loved. I knew if I let Dixie sneak her way inside my heart and something happened to her there would be nothing left of me. There wouldn’t be anyplace left for me to run.

“Kiss me,” he says, and I close my mouth over his, losing myself in the sensation of being body on body like this, so close I can’t tell if the heartbeat I’m feeling belongs to Ryan or me. We move slowly at first, but there’s no holding back, and soon our motions are frenzied. Soon, he’s exploding inside me. Soon, I shatter in his arms. “Oh, baby,” he murmurs when we’re sane again and he’s looking at my face with eyes filled with love. “You are so beautiful.” I bend and kiss him—my heart overflowing. And I can’t help but think how different it is with Ryan than the men I’d been with before. Before, when a guy called me beautiful, I’d mentally cringed, at least a little. Because the truth is, I am beautiful. It’s not an ego thing—it’s just an empirical fact. It’s useful, and I’ve definitely traded on it. But it’s not who I am. Not the heart of me. And in my life BR— Before Ryan—whenever a guy called me beautiful, I never knew if he cared about me, or if he was just happy to have a pretty piece of a**. With Ryan, I know without a doubt that he loves me. And the beauty he sees in me is more than what a camera sees. He sees the whole woman. A lover, a friend. He sees a girl he can laugh with. That he can talk to. A woman to spend long, lazy nights with. A woman with hopes and dreams and fears and doubts. He sees me. Jamie Archer. And that’s a really nice feeling. “I love you,” I say, those little words just spilling out of me. “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.” The moment I say the words, though, I regret them. Not because they aren’t true—they are. But because I can see the response on Ryan’s face, though he knows enough not to say the words out loud. If that’s true, then why won’t you marry me?

Blog Tour: Rough & Tumble | Rhenna Morgan

Guest Post

Hey there, everyone! My name is Vivienne Moore!

Well, it was Vivienne Moore. Now it’s Vivienne Kennedy. Rhenna is currently up to her eyeballs wrestling one of the brothers into his happily ever after, so she asked if I would step in and introduce everyone to my happily ever after from her new book ROUGH & TUMBLE—Jace Kennedy.

I have to tell you, as impressions go, my first one of Jace was a mix of terrifying and bungee-jump goodness. Granted, I was trying to wrangle my wasted sister out of a bar on New Year’s Eve and was exhausted from a full day of work, but most of the tongue-tying impact came from his bare chest, wicked tattoos and the knife wound his brother was stitching up on one shoulder. Yeah, tall, dark and deadly sums it up quite nicely. Dark brown hair to his shoulders, even darker eyes and a full beard I couldn’t help but imagine feeling in a long hard kiss.

I confess, I let that initial impression color my judgment for a while. On the surface, Jace is very much the badass in-your-face guy I initially thought he was, but I learned over time he’s got a whole lot more layers than he shows those outside his family. For starters, he’s smart. Like crazy smart. Enough so he scored a full ride not just to college, but to law school after that.

He’s also a philanthropist, a trait I think stems from the years he had to fight, beg and crawl out of hard times. He might have enough money now that he’ll never want for anything again, but he definitely hasn’t forgotten where he came from.

But the best part of Jace? His love for family. For his moms and the brothers he’s chosen for his own. Yeah, he’s rough. But he’s also the most loyal and caring man I’ve ever known. The one thing I’ve learned through loving him—no matter how dangerous the world around me might get, I will never be safer than I am in his arms.

I hope you’ll grab your copy of ROUGH & TUMBLE and get to know Jace for yourself. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

"Gritty, raw, and a side dose of sweet lovin'. Rough & Tumble by Rhenna Morgan will warm your heart and melt your panties." —#1 New York Times bestselling author Audrey Carlan (Calendar Girl series)

Live hard, f*ck harder and follow only their own rules. Those are the cornerstones the six men of the Haven Brotherhood live and bleed by, refusing to conform to society's expectations, taking what they want and always watching each other's backs.

A self-made man with his fingers in a variety of successful businesses, Jace Kennedy lives for the challenge and he always gets what he wants. From the start, he sees Vivienne Moore's hidden wild side and knows she's his perfect match, if only he can break it free. He will have her. One way or another.

Vivienne's determined to ditch the rough lifestyle she grew up in, even if that means hiding her true self behind a bland socialite veneer. Dragging her party-hound sister out of a club was not how she wanted to ring in the New Year, but Viv knows the drill. Get in, get her sister and get back to the safe, stable life she's built for herself as fast as humanly possible. But Viv's plans are derailed when she finds herself crashing into the club's clearly badass and dangerously sexy owner.

Jace is everything Vivienne swore she never wanted, but the more time she spends with him, the more she starts to see that he loves just as fiercely as he fights. He can walk society's walk and talk society's talk, but when he wants something, he finds a way to get it. He's proud of who he is and where he came from, and he'll be damned if he lets Vivienne go before showing her the safest place of all is in the arms of a dangerous man
